Travel Tips - The Climate of Japan and The Japanese Culture

Japan is a beautiful country that comprises of islands and you can experience all four seasons here spread across the year. Japan is a country of 127 million people full of life and energy and has transformed into one of the world's largest economies since the World War 2. Japan has made remarkable advancement in technology and its electronics and automobile industry has the biggest market share in the world. The Japanese engineers and skilled workers are performing duties in every walk of life all over the world.

The Climate

The total area of Japan is 377,944 sq. km and only 0.8% of it is underwater. Winters are generally cool and sunny in most parts of the country. Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is very cold and it snows occasionally in winter in this city. Hokkaido is the coldest place which is completely covered in snow for 1/3rd of a year. Summer season runs from the end of May till late September and the climate ranges from warm to very hot. Occasional rainfalls are experienced throughout the year but rainy season runs from the 3rd week of June to the last week of July. The climate is mild in spring and autumn whereas Typhoons are expected in September and October but do not last for more than 24 hours.

Average Temperature

Average temperature of the country is around 23.2°C.August is the warmest month in terms of average temperature in Japan as average temperature reaches 31.3°C. January is the coldest month with average temperature of -1.1 °C. Minimum rains are expected in January and February and maximum rainfall is experienced in October. Average annual humidity of Japan is 71.5%. Lowest humidity of 60% is recorded from January to February as it is the dry period with minimum rains and highest humidity of 80% is recorded in rainy season in July.

When to Visit

If you are planning your trip to Japan then the period from March to May is perfect. The main reason for many tourists to visit Japan is Sakura or cherry blossoms that start blooming at the end of February. So if you plan your visit in March then you will definitely get a look at blossoming Sakura.

When Not to Visit


Japan has attractions for tourists throughout the year and people like to spend long holidays here. There is a vacation period called the Golden Week at the start of May. You should avoid travelling to Japan during this week as streets are heavily crowded.
